Science Magic You Can Do : Ice Fishing06 July 2020 GCE Admin|A
Challenge your friend: can they rescue an ice cube with a piece of string without getting their fingers wet or touching the ice cube or the glass of water in any way?
They can't use utensils or other silverware, but they can be creative and use anything else on the table. The solution: drape the piece of string over the ice cube (get as much surface area of the string in contact with the ice cube as possible. It helps if the string is wet.) Sprinkle salt onto the string and ice cube, wait half a minute, and gently lift up on the string. If your placement of the string and salt was good, the salt melted a little bit of the ice, then re-froze, trapping the string in the ice.
